I knew almost nothing about Easter Island when I
was asked to write this book. I was fascinated to
learn about the people who first found the island
and then, over the course of several hundred years,
chopped down all its large trees. Without the
trees, they couldn't make the canoes they needed to
leave the island, essentially stranding themselves.
Understanding the history of Easter Island might
help modern humans make better environmental
choices...
